Heading into the final third of 2024, the count of LBM locations that got new owners this year has hit 1,004. There also have been 157 greenfield facility openings that have taken place or are planned for later this year, plus 28 closures.
A total of 103 separate acquisitions by 52 buyers propelled those 1,001 facility purchases. The Home Depot’s takeover of SRS Distribution was by far the biggest, taking in 767 stores. The other 101 deals encompassed 237 stores, for an average of 2.3 facilities per deal. That’s a slightly slower deals pace than in the past two years.
Among the latest actions:
- Beacon announced two deals the same day. In the first of its Aug. 2 announcements, Beacon said it took over Passaic Metal & Building Supplies, which has five stores in New Jersey and one in New York. The other acquired SSR Roofing Supply of Surrey and Burnaby, British Columbia. And in mid-July, Beacon bought Walnut, CA-based Roofers Mart of Southern California and opened new branches in Midlothian, TX. and Athens, GA.
- ABC Supply got its first store in the city of Los Angeles when it acquired America Building Materials.
- US LBM acquired L.D. Mullins Lumber of Riviera Beach, FL, and folded it into its Raymond Building Supply family in South Florida. In addition, Texas Building Supply–US LBM’s new name for much of its Texas operations–is slated around Sept. 1 to open a new, commercially oriented facility in Liberty Hill, TX.
- 84 Lumber opened a door facility in Lawrence, PA.
- High Country Lumber of Bishop, CA, went across town to buy Home Lumber.
- Kodiak Building Partners grew again in the Pacific Northwest, this time buying Thomas Building Center in Sequim, WA.
- Nation’s Best Holdings bought Huntington Lumber & Supply of Hazlehurst, MS.
- After its acquisition by The Home Depot, SRS Distribution opened a RoofLine Supply branch in Rancho Cordova. In July, it opened an American Roofing Supply branch in Castle Rock, CO.
- Westlake Ace Hardware, a division of Ace Hardware Corp., bought Breed & Co., a group of four stores serving the Austin, TX, area.
- L&W Supply, the drywall division of ABC Supply, opened a store in Yuma, AZ.
- Decks & Docks expanded to what, for it, is an inland city: Manassas, VA.
- ABC Supply opened branches in Texas, Oklahoma, and New York.
- Floor & Decor opened new branches in Deerfield, IL, and West Palm Beach, FL.
